Sinaia Ship Logs
In Sinaia Ship Logs, I explored flattening, perception, and the creation of identity through the SS Sinaia, the refugee boat my great-grandparents traveled on during the Spanish Civil War. I made a series of risograph prints combining family photos, passages from the boat's daily newspaper, and archival images, capturing the complexity of their migration. Using Schieder’s idea of traducere navem, I thought about the boat not just as a physical vessel but as a place where collective experiences, texts, and images were transformed, then flattened in the form of the onboard newspaper. I used the flatness of printmaking but created something layered, where collaged images could form new meanings, much like how identity is built, distorted, and preserved through migration and memory.
